Overview
Durkan & Sons Ltd delivered specialist groundworks and civil engineering works as part of the restoration of The Piece Hall, Halifax. Originally opened in 1779, The Piece Hall is one of Britain’s finest surviving Georgian cloth halls and a Grade I listed building of exceptional historical significance.
Working within a highly sensitive heritage environment, our team delivered the enabling works and infrastructure required to transform the site into a vibrant destination for retail, hospitality, culture and public events while carefully preserving its historic character. Every phase of the project required close coordination with conservation specialists, engineers and the wider project team to ensure modern infrastructure could be successfully integrated within this nationally significant landmark.
Key Deliverables
Groundworks & Excavation
- Precision excavation within a Grade I listed heritage site.
- Selective demolition and controlled excavation works.
- Spoil removal using a bespoke conveyor system to minimise disruption and protect the historic structure.
- Construction of retaining walls, stepped access routes and public seating areas.

Foundations & Reinforced Concrete Works

Public Realm & Heritage Works
- Careful lifting, storage and reinstatement of original Yorkstone paving.
- Installation of reclaimed Yorkstone setts and traditional kerbing.
- Construction of bespoke hard landscaping features.
- Installation of decorative water features and landscaped public spaces.
