Romford Greyhound Stadium Groundworks & Civil Engineering

Durkan & Sons Ltd were appointed by K2 Mechanical & Engineering Services Ltd to deliver specialist groundworks and civil engineering works at Romford Greyhound Stadium, one of the UK’s best-known greyhound racing venues.

Working within a live sporting environment, our team completed ducting installations, trenchless crossings, reinforced concrete foundations and surface water drainage improvements while ensuring racing operations could continue safely with minimal disruption.

Project Scope

The project included:

  • Installation of 2-way and 4-way 100mm ducting.
  • Trenchless ducting beneath operational areas.
  • Construction of a reinforced concrete plinth measuring 2000mm x 3000mm x 450mm.
  • Surface water drainage improvements around the racing track.
  • Excavation, reinstatement and associated civil engineering works.

Working Within a Live Stadium

Delivering construction works within an operational sports venue required careful planning, close coordination with the client and strict health and safety management.

Works were phased around stadium operations, with controlled access, secure work zones and continuous communication ensuring public safety while allowing racing activities to continue.

Ducting & Utility Infrastructure

Our engineers installed new 2-way and 4-way ducting routes to accommodate future electrical and mechanical services.

Where open excavation would have affected the racing surface or public areas, trenchless installation techniques were used to minimise disruption and reduce reinstatement requirements. All excavations were completed under Permit to Dig procedures with CAT & Genny surveys, hand digging in sensitive areas and provision of service slack loops for future connections.

Concrete Foundation Construction

Durkan & Sons constructed a reinforced concrete plinth measuring 2000mm x 3000mm x 450mm to provide a stable foundation for future mechanical and electrical equipment.

The works included excavation, formation preparation, reinforcement installation, concrete placement and finishing to the required specification.

Surface Water Drainage Improvements

Drainage improvements were undertaken to reduce surface water build-up around the racing track, helping improve drainage performance and maintaining safe operating conditions during periods of wet weather.

Careful excavation, installation and reinstatement ensured the surrounding infrastructure remained fully operational throughout the project.

Project Challenges

  • Working safely within a live sports venue.
  • Maintaining public and staff access throughout construction.
  • Reducing disruption through trenchless installation techniques.
  • Protecting existing services using safe excavation practices.
  • Delivering multiple work elements within a restricted programme.

Project Outcome

The project was completed safely, on programme and to the client’s specification.

Durkan & Sons successfully delivered new utility infrastructure, reinforced concrete foundations and drainage improvements while maintaining safe stadium operations throughout the works.
