Project Overview

Phased fibre infrastructure across a live urban network

Durkan & Sons Ltd delivered the civil engineering and groundworks required for a major full fibre rollout across central and south Castleford.

The programme combined extensive underground ducting, jointing chambers, concrete fibre-cabinet bases and surface reinstatement across residential streets. Excavation and installation activities were coordinated to maintain access to homes and businesses while limiting disruption to the wider community.

Scope of Works

Complete civils for full fibre installation

Coordinated excavation, network infrastructure and reinstatement delivered across carriageways, footways and landscaped areas.

01 / DUCTING

Telecommunications Ducting

Underground routes formed for the new full fibre network throughout the rollout area.

  • Carriageway and footway excavation
  • Telecommunications duct installation
  • Service trenches and route formation
  • Backfilling and compaction
  • Installation through residential streets
02 / NETWORK

Chambers & Cabinet Bases

Permanent access and equipment infrastructure positioned throughout the network.

  • Jointing chamber construction
  • Concrete fibre-cabinet bases
  • Associated network infrastructure
  • Accurate setting out and levels
  • Interfaces with fibre installation teams
03 / REINSTATEMENT

Highways & Footways

Disturbed surfaces reinstated to suit their existing construction and surrounding finish.

  • Carriageway reinstatement
  • Paved footway reinstatement
  • Concrete footway repairs
  • Soft-landscape reinstatement
  • Final surfacing and making good
04 / COORDINATION

Live Highway Delivery

Workfronts managed around people, properties, traffic and the existing utility network.

  • Phased excavation and installation
  • Access maintained for homes and businesses
  • Pedestrian and traffic interfaces
  • Existing service awareness
  • Community disruption minimised
Phased Delivery

Two work areas, one coordinated programme

The rollout moved from central Castleford into the south of the town, with each phase planned around its streets, surfaces and access requirements.

Phase 02 / Central Castleford

Central Castleford

May to July 2023

5,300m+Ducting installed
950+Properties in area

Extensive network civils across the town centre area, including challenging reinstatement within concrete and paved footways.

Phase 03 / South Castleford

South Castleford

August 2023 to March 2024

3,900m+Ducting installed
720+Properties in area

The network extended through Lightfoot Avenue, Gregory Road, South View and surrounding residential streets.

Live Highway Environments

Planned around access, safety and the community

Telecommunications civils involve repeated workfronts across occupied streets. The programme depended on disciplined sequencing, clear work areas and timely reinstatement as teams progressed through each route.

01 / PLAN

Route Coordination

Plan excavations around the existing highway layout, properties and buried infrastructure.

02 / PROTECT

Safe Interfaces

Control pedestrian, traffic and resident interfaces around active work areas.

03 / MAINTAIN

Property Access

Sequence activities to keep homes and businesses accessible throughout delivery.

04 / REINSTATE

Surface Completion

Backfill, compact and reinstate each surface to suit its existing construction.

Delivery Capability

Built for repeatable, street-by-street progress

The two Castleford phases demonstrate Durkan & Sons’ ability to organise multiple civil engineering activities across an extended urban programme while retaining control of access, workmanship and reinstatement quality.

  • High-volume duct installation across multiple streets
  • Chambers and equipment bases integrated with the network
  • Work sequenced around live residential and highway use
  • Reinstatement matched to varied existing surfaces
Project Outcome

Infrastructure delivered for a major full fibre rollout

Across the two phases, Durkan & Sons installed more than 9,200 metres of telecommunications ducting through areas containing over 1,670 properties, together with the chambers, bases and reinstatement needed to complete the civil engineering works.

The programme provides a strong example of coordinated telecoms civils delivered at scale across active residential and urban highway environments.
