Durkan & Sons Ltd was appointed to deliver the principal civil engineering package for the West Stand Enabling Works at Elland Road Stadium, Leeds. The project formed a key part of the enabling infrastructure required to facilitate the future redevelopment of one of England’s most iconic football stadiums.

Working within a live stadium environment required detailed planning, careful logistics and close coordination with the construction management team, designers and specialist contractors to safely deliver the works while maintaining day-to-day stadium operations.

• Main foul and surface water drainage installation
• Deep drainage and precast manhole construction
• Bulk earthworks and excavation
• Utility diversions
• High voltage, low voltage and communications duct networks
• Outside Broadcast (OB) compound infrastructure
• Reinforced concrete foundations and structures
• Stormwater attenuation infrastructure
• Temporary roads, footpaths and access routes
• Highway and footpath reinstatement
• Block paving, kerbing and external works
• Temporary hoarding and site security infrastructure

Engineering Challenges

Delivering civil engineering works within a fully operational football stadium presented significant engineering and logistical challenges. Our team worked around matchday operations, conferences, public events and live utility infrastructure while coordinating with multiple trades and maintaining safe access for staff, visitors and contractors.

Careful sequencing, detailed planning and effective communication were essential to successfully delivering the enabling works within a complex live environment.

Project Delivery

The works included extensive underground infrastructure, comprising drainage networks, utility diversions, multiduct installations, reinforced concrete structures, earthworks, highway reinstatement and temporary infrastructure. Throughout the project, Durkan & Sons worked collaboratively with the wider project team to support the successful delivery of this critical phase of the stadium redevelopment.
