Durkan & Sons: Groundworks for 29 New Affordable Family Homes in Darfield
The Challenge
Durkan & Sons were contracted by Jack Lunn Group to provide comprehensive groundworks services for a development of 29 new affordable family homes in Darfield, South Yorkshire. The site, located on George Street in Darfield, Barnsley, comprised a mix of 2, 3, and 4-bedroom dwellings, all two-story except for one 2-bedroom bungalow. The project required careful coordination with other trades and strict adherence to local regulations to ensure the timely delivery of these essential homes.

Our Solution
Our contract encompassed building all plots complete with two new adopted access roads (block paved), all associated external works, including extensive surface water attenuation, and new mains services. The site also involved considerable works to the existing public boundary path and highway, all in accordance with Local Authority requirements and completed under Section 278.
Our expert team meticulously managed all aspects of the groundworks for this development, including:
- Excavations on site: This involved the precise and efficient excavation of earth to prepare the site for foundations, drainage, and other infrastructure, while adhering to safety and environmental standards.
- RC Foundations: Constructing reinforced concrete foundations to provide a stable base for the homes.
- Deep Drainage & Plot Drainage: Implementing effective drainage systems to manage water runoff and prevent issues with dampness.
- Brickwork up to DPC: Completing the brickwork up to the damp proof course level, ensuring a solid and protected structure.
- Concrete Slabs: Laying concrete slabs to form the base of the homes.
- 278 Works: Carrying out all necessary works related to roads and sewers, ensuring they meet the required standards and regulations.
- Paving and Externals: Creating durable and aesthetically pleasing paving and external areas around the homes.
