Protecting Critical Infrastructure from River Aire Flooding
Located in a flood-prone area of Kirkstall, Leeds, this critical electrical and communications installation faced a significant risk from the adjacent River Aire. Durkan & Sons were commissioned to design and construct a comprehensive flood defence solution to safeguard this vital infrastructure against future flood events.
Comprehensive Construction and Engineering
Our team employed a multifaceted approach to mitigate the flood risk posed by the River Aire. This involved a range of civil engineering and construction activities, including:
- Perimeter Flood Wall Construction: A robust reinforced concrete flood wall was constructed around the perimeter of the facility, acting as the first line of defence against rising water levels from the River Aire.
- Drainage System Enhancement: Recognizing the potential for both river flooding and surface water runoff, we expertly rerouted existing drainage systems and incorporated advanced flood defence devices within the underground drainage network to effectively manage water flow and prevent ingress.
- Reinforced Concrete Structures: To further enhance the site’s resilience against flood forces, we constructed reinforced concrete slabs and plinths, ensuring structural integrity and long-term durability.
- Site Reinstatement and Landscaping: Upon completion of the construction works, we fully reinstated the site and implemented landscaping solutions to minimize visual impact and promote environmental integration.
