Durkan & Sons Ltd is looking for an experienced Plant Fitter to join our team in Kellington, North Yorkshire.
You will work in our workshop and at construction sites across Yorkshire, servicing and repairing construction plant, machinery and vehicles, including our HGV fleet.
This is a varied role covering planned maintenance, fault finding and mobile breakdown response. We’re looking for someone practical, reliable and able to work independently.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Servicing and repairing excavators, dumpers, loaders, rollers and smaller plant.
- Diagnosing diesel engine, hydraulic, electrical and mechanical faults.
- Attending site breakdowns and carrying out on-site repairs.
- Maintaining and inspecting HGVs, including preparation for roadworthiness tests.
- Carrying out welding and fabrication repairs.
- Checking returned plant and preparing machines for their next job.
- Carrying out safety inspections within your competence and supporting PUWER inspections and LOLER thorough examinations.
- Identifying replacement parts and working with the office to arrange repairs.
- Using a company tablet to record servicing, defects, repairs and site attendance.
- Keeping the workshop, service van and tools safe and organised.
Qualifications and Licences
Essential
- NVQ Level 2 or above in Plant Maintenance (Construction), or an equivalent plant maintenance apprenticeship qualification.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable
- A Level 3 plant maintenance qualification.
- A relevant plant inspection qualification, such as the Level 3 NVQ in Testing, Inspecting and Thorough Examination Occupations (Construction), together with proven competence to carry out on-site LOLER thorough examinations of construction plant.
- HGV driving licence – Category C or C+E.
- Additional training in HGV maintenance, PUWER inspections or welding.
- Manufacturer training in plant servicing, diagnostics or hydraulic systems.
Experience and Skills
- Proven experience maintaining and repairing construction plant.
- Good knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics and electrical systems.
- Experience maintaining HGVs and preparing them for roadworthiness tests.
- Practical welding and fabrication skills.
- Strong fault-finding skills and the ability to get to the cause of a problem.
- Confidence working independently in the workshop and on site.
- Comfortable using a tablet and keeping accurate maintenance records.
- A reliable, organised and safe approach to work.

Experience working on these manufacturers’ machines would be an advantage.
