In 2014, Durkan & Sons Ltd proudly delivered civil engineering and groundworks for the Piece Hall Restoration in Halifax, a landmark transformation of one of Britain’s most iconic heritage sites.
Now, 10 years on, we’re reflecting on the scale, complexity, and importance of this defining project. As a Grade I listed Georgian cloth hall, The Piece Hall required sensitive structural preservation while introducing modern infrastructure for public use.
A Legacy of Precision and Preservation
Our work involved critical groundworks and civil engineering packages, delivered in collaboration with heritage consultants and public authorities. This included:
- Structural Works: Selective demolition, excavation, concrete foundations, retaining walls, and public access features
- Drainage & Utilities: Full storm and foul drainage, PPIC manholes, slot drains, and service diversions
- Public Realm: Yorkstone reinstatement, reclaimed setts, bespoke paving, and water features
- Sustainability: Recycled materials, BREEAM-aligned methods, and environmentally sensitive working zones
Project Challenges & Collaboration
The site’s city-centre location and historical sensitivity required:
- Hand excavation and vacuum systems
- Temporary structural supports
- Daily toolbox talks and phased logistics
We worked closely with archaeologists, the local authority, and project managers to maintain the heritage fabric throughout the build.
