Overview
Durkan & Sons Ltd were appointed by GMI Construction to deliver the comprehensive groundworks and civil engineering package for the new 436,000 sq ft Vantec 3 distribution warehouse at the Nissan Manufacturing Facility in Washington, Sunderland.
The warehouse was developed as part of the logistics infrastructure supporting Nissan’s Sunderland vehicle manufacturing operations, one of the UK’s largest automotive production facilities. Delivered over approximately six months, the project required extensive earthworks, reinforced concrete structures, deep drainage, surface water attenuation and external infrastructure to support the construction of this major industrial development.
Significant groundwater conditions presented one of the project’s key engineering challenges, requiring a continuous dewatering system throughout construction to maintain safe working conditions and keep the programme on schedule.

Project Outcome
The Vantec 3 warehouse was successfully completed, providing a modern 436,000 sq ft logistics facility supporting Nissan’s Sunderland Manufacturing Plant and its vehicle production operations.
Despite challenging groundwater conditions, Durkan & Sons delivered the complete groundworks package safely and efficiently, providing the reinforced concrete structures, drainage systems and infrastructure required for one of the North East’s most significant industrial and logistics developments.
