Forging the Foundation: Vantec 3 Warehouse Groundworks
Client: GMI
Project Overview: Durkan & Sons was entrusted with the extensive groundworks for the new 436,000 sq ft Vantec 3 warehouse in Washington, Sunderland. This major project, spanning approximately 6 months, showcased our comprehensive civil engineering capabilities and expertise in overcoming site challenges.
What We Did:
- Site Preparation: We conducted extensive excavations across the site, preparing the ground for the warehouse construction.
- Water Management: To address groundwater challenges, we installed a full-time dewatering system and implemented a Tubosider water attenuation system, ensuring a dry and stable working environment.
- Drainage: We excavated and installed a large-diameter deep drainage system to effectively manage surface water runoff.
- Foundations: Our team expertly handled pile cropping, constructed reinforced concrete pile caps, and laid robust foundations and slabs to support the massive warehouse structure.
- Site Services: We provided comprehensive ducting for essential site services and mechanical and electrical (M&E) installations.
- External Works: Our scope extended beyond the building itself to include road construction, car parks, and concrete aprons, creating a fully functional logistics hub.
- Drainage Optimization: We installed Oil Interceptors and a QMax Linear Drainage system to ensure responsible environmental management.
Project Challenges: Groundwater presented a significant hurdle, requiring a robust dewatering solution. Our team effectively managed this challenge while maintaining project timelines and delivering high-quality work.
Project Outcomes: By providing comprehensive and expertly executed groundworks, Durkan & Sons laid the foundation for a state-of-the-art logistics facility. Our work enabled the successful construction of the Vantec 3 warehouse, a vital addition to the region’s distribution network.
