Overview
Durkan & Sons Ltd delivered civil engineering and groundworks for a major full fibre network rollout across Castleford, West Yorkshire.
The works involved extensive new duct infrastructure, jointing chambers, fibre cabinet bases and reinstatement across residential streets and urban areas.
Working within the existing highway network required careful coordination of excavation, installation and reinstatement while maintaining access to homes and businesses and minimising disruption to the surrounding community.
Scope of Works
Telecommunications Ducting
Our teams installed extensive underground duct infrastructure throughout Castleford to provide routes for the new full fibre telecommunications network.
Works included excavation, duct installation, backfilling and reinstatement across carriageways, footways and soft landscaped areas.
Jointing Chambers & Cabinet Bases
Jointing chambers and associated telecommunications infrastructure were constructed throughout the network, together with concrete bases for fibre cabinets and associated equipment.
Highway & Footway Reinstatement
Following installation, disturbed surfaces were reinstated to suit the existing construction. This included paved and concrete footways, carriageways and soft landscaped areas.

Phase 2 – Central Castleford
Programme: May – July 2023
Properties Passed: 950+
Ducting Installed: 5,300m+
This phase involved extensive works across central Castleford, including challenging reinstatement within concrete and paved footways.
Phase 3 – South Castleford
Programme: August 2023 – March 2024
Properties Passed: 720+
Ducting Installed: 3,900m+
Works extended across South Castleford, including Lightfoot Avenue, Gregory Road, South View and surrounding streets.
Delivering Telecoms Civils in Live Highway Environments
The Castleford full fibre programme demonstrates Durkan & Sons’ capability to deliver high-volume telecommunications civils across active residential and urban highway networks.
Across Phases 2 and 3 alone, the works included more than 9,200 metres of ducting serving areas containing more than 1,670 properties.
